Our own Marlo details the historical significance of Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Biddleville, the oldest predominantly Black neighborhood in the city. Founded in 1878, the church grew alongside the Black community, but its physical structure deteriorated over time. Efforts to preserve it highlight broader issues of gentrification and neglect of Black history in Charlotte.

Based on the 1982 book of the same name by Alice Walker. The book is the coming-of-age story of a Black girl in rural Georgia in the early 1900s, told through a series of letters.
