    Our own Marlo details the historical significance of Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Biddleville, the oldest predominantly Black neighborhood in the city. Founded in 1878, the church grew alongside the Black community, but its physical structure deteriorated over time. Efforts to preserve it highlight broader issues of gentrification and neglect of Black history in Charlotte.

  • The Undeniable Septima P. Clark

    Septima Poinsette Clark, born in 1898 in Charleston, was a pioneering figure in the Civil Rights Movement. Educated at a time when opportunities for Black individuals were scarce, she led initiatives for literacy and voting rights. As director of Citizenship Schools, Clark empowered many Black Americans, significantly increasing voter registration.
