Welcome back to Myths & Mischief! This is your Lovable Lord of Lore, today’s mischievous myth is the seventh installment of the tale of the death of America’s master of the macabre, Edgar Allen Poe.
This is the 7th part of a short story that gives a possible explanation of famous author Edgar Allen Poe’s demise.

“Dr. Moran,” Thompson announced as he entered the room. “Good to see you again.”
“Hello Inspector, what can I do for you?”
“We were just stopping by to see if you had any updates for us regarding Mr. Poe.”
“I did receive letters from both his aunt and his fiancé.”
“What did they say?”
“Well, his aunt requested his paperwork and information about my findings. Ms. Royster explained that her and Mr. Poe had been engaged, and that she was struggling with what happened.”
“Do you mean his death, or the cause of his death?” asked Thompson.
“Or anything else important?” Wilson added.
“I don’t think it was specific either way. I got the feeling she was looking for a sympathetic ear.” replied Dr. Moran.
Thompson thought about it. “Knowing that we were in contact with you, and she wouldn’t say anything at her house, could it be that she was sending us a message?”
“She did deny them being engaged, that alone is worth investigating.” added Wilson.
“I agree. Doctor, is there anything else new that is pertinent to our investigation.” Thompson asked.
“There is another thing, but it may be immaterial. I re-examined the body and I found no signs of bites. Did you find out anything that may point to a cause of death?”
“The animals checked out just fine. We did run into a doctor in Richmond that thought his death might be related to coal gas poisoning. He didn’t think it was rabies if Poe was drinking water with you.” Thompson reported.
“Did he give a reason to why he thought it was coal gas poisoning?
Thompson reviewed his notes briefly and said “Part of it was that he looked different over time. He compared what he looked like when he knew him, and through press related pictures, claiming his appearance changed.”
“What about his appearance changed, did he say?”
Thompson looked again at his notes, “He mentioned the slanting of Mr. Poe’s eyes and mouth.”
Yes, I haven’t ruled that out, but to be in good health and then dead just weeks later, I’m still not convinced.”
“We’ll let you know if we find out more regarding his cause of death. We need to head out of town, but we should be back by the end of the week.”
“Safe travels.” called Dr. Moran as the inspectors left.
